Hughesnet Enters Bankruptcy: What Customers Need to Know About Their Internet

After declining subscriber counts and financial issues, the Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation, the operator of Hughesnet satellite internet, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a reorganization of a company as it attempts to deal with its debt. As of right now, the company has no plans to shut its doors, but the move represents a big shift as it likely winds down its consumer internet businesses, which have been quickly overtaken by fierce competition. 

Despite the financial headwinds and a loss of subscribers, Hughesnet still serves about 622,000 customers as of 2026, and customers may be concerned about what this means for their internet service. Hughesnet customers, especially those in rural areas, may be wondering what their options are.

Accoding to Hughes' restructuring website, there will be no immediate impact for current customers and that day-to-day operations will continue.

"Hughes is operating as usual, and we expect no disruption to your service as a result of this process," the statement reads "You can continue to rely on Hughes and Hughesnet for fast, reliable connectivity solutions."

Don't expect your internet service to suddenly go away, so continue your paying your bill as usual to maintain service. The long-term affects of the change are less clear, as Hughesnet has admitted in financial statements that competition from Starlink and others have severely affected its bottom line, and that the company may focus more on enterprise and government service and move away from residential internet.

While it's unclear what the future holds for Hughesnet and current customers during this restructure, customers who are nervous about their internet service may have more options today than they did when they first signed up. Hughesnet was one of the first companies to offer satellite internet service that reached homes that other providers couldn't. Now there are more satellite internet providers that are readily available.

• Starlink: SpaceX’s low-earth orbit (LEO) network, which offers significantly lower latency (less lag) and higher speeds than traditional geostationary satellites.
• Viasat: Hughes's traditional geostationary rival, which may offer promotional deals to capture transitioning Hughes customers.

Another option that's become more available to rural customers is 5G fixed-wireless access. It's a wireless internet option that uses cell towers to deliver internet. Cellular providers like T-Mobile and Verizon have expanded into offering home internet service using the same signals they use to deliver mobile service. 5G home internet is generally cheaper, has no data caps, no equipment fees, and faster performance than satellite. However, 5G performance is dependent on proximity to a 5G tower, so it's not available everywhere and can have a poor signal in very remote locations.
