The people of Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, are about to get a rather large neighbor in SpaceX, so the company is offering a neighborly gift. Residents just south of Lafayette can now get a free Starlink dish and half off residential internet plans, courtesy of SpaceX. Current Starlink customers in the region will have this discount automatically applied to their accounts. This means people on the base 100Mbps plan will now pay $27.50 per month instead of $55. This applies only to home internet, not Starlink Roam plans.

Home of the future Spacebase
SpaceX announced that the Louisiana wetlands will be home to its planned Spacebase. The company aims to make it the future hub for its Starship craft, planning to launch it thousands of times a year. It's said to be the largest launch facility in the world when completed. The Starship will carry tons of cargo to orbit and beyond, including thousands of more Starlink satellites.
The base will take multiple years of construction and significant investment from SpaceX, so it's laying the groundwork to win over the community. It applied the same special discount to areas around Memphis, Tenn., and Southaven, Miss., earlier this Summer since it's the site of xAI's Colossus data centers. The incentive came at a time when data centers across the country are facing scrutiny from neighboring communities that criticize the space they occupy and the noise and pollution from on-site generators.
The Vermilion Parish area is easily considered rural, making it an ideal place for Starlink to build a large foothold.
How does the Starlink discount work?
The discount is automatically applied at checkout on the website when purchasing a new Starlink kit with a monthly plan. According to Starlink, the discount applies to the next bill for current customers. A support page doesn't indicate how long the promotion will be available or whether the discount is limited-time or permanent.
Keep the promotion restrictions in mind. The discount is location-locked, so you'll be unable to simply order a free Starlink in the discount region and take it elsewhere. If it's activated at a different address, Starlink will bill you the full amount.
