Starlink Quietly Expands Free Mini Rentals Beyond the Max Plan

Starlink has seemingly expanded its deal for a free Starlink Mini rental with the purchase of its top-tier Residential Max plan to all plans, though it's not saying whether just anyone can qualify for the deal. Customers on the 100Mbps and 200Mbps plans have received emails informing them they're eligible for the optional Starlink Mini rental with discounted Roam monthly plans. 

The Starlink Mini, designed for travel, is laptop-sized, lightweight, and includes a built-in Wi-Fi router. Starlink has made no announcement about the promotion, aside from the email and a subtle change on its support page about the deal. The page refers to eligible customers as those on a Residential plan in select regions, not just Max.

Customers on 100Mbps and 200Mbps get a reduced Roam rate for their Mini, but not the 50 percent discount. The email notes that upgrading their Residential plan to Max qualifies them for the larger discount.

What's confusing is that Starlink isn't actively advertising the Mini kit perk, and it doesn't show up on its site when signing up for a new 100Mbps or 200Mbps plan, though it still appears as part of the MAX plan. Many customers who shared the email online were surprised by the offer and assumed they weren't eligible when signing up. All this to say, it's hard to guarantee that every new Starlink Residential sign-up will get this offer.

The free Starlink Mini rental first started in early 2026, with the rebrand of the Residential Max plan, which included other perks like a free Router Mini and free professional installation. New customers were told they would get an email within a couple of weeks to claim the optional rental deal. However, some customers reported waiting months for the email, and even Starlink acknowledged the delays, citing high demand. Then the deal suddenly disappeared over the summer, only to reappear a few months later.

In a discussion of the surprise offer, one Reddit poster suggested Starlink is clearing inventory ahead of the next Starlink Mini. A new version of the Mini has been teased for months, and experts point to evidence that it will be battery-powered, making it even more portable. Earlier this summer, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk showed off a new Mini device, but didn't share details like features, pricing, or a release date. 

Starlink may be trying to ship more Mini kits before formally introducing a Starlink Mini 2 and ramping up marketing. Along with extending the Mini perk to more users, Starlink also introduced a monthly payment plan rather than a $199 upfront cost for a new Mini kit. Keeping the offer for lower-tier plan customers low-key may mean it won't be available for long, so we advise you to proceed at your own risk if you're interested in Starlink and the Mini kit incentive is a major selling point.
