Residents in rural New York State who are in need of affordable internet can now qualify for Starlink satellite internet service for $15 per month. New York’s Affordable Broadband Act is the state’s replacement of the federal Affordable Connectivity Act, which ended in early 2024. It requires internet providers that operate in the state to provide an option for low-income households. The service plan must provide at least 25Mbps download speed for no more than $15 per month. Buyers will still need to buy the $349 Starlink dish, but will still save $65 per month on the Residential Lite plan.
Starlink has fought to be exempt from the law, on the grounds that it doesn’t reach the 200,000 customer threshold the law defines. However, the company is complying for the time being and has released instructions on how to join the program.
