Starlink is doubling down on its discounted equipment by offering its Standard dishes for free with a 12-month commitment. Starlink satellite internet equipment, which has been priced at $349 for several months, can now be ordered for $0, with just a monthly service fee of $120 to stay connected. Starlink has been testing this program in several international markets, but it’s the first time they’re bringing the deal to the U.S.

This offer only applies to select states and regions, which appear to mostly be the same areas where Starlink previously offered a $200 regional savings discount on dishes. This program has come to a close, but it has been replaced with this new 12-month commitment option. It’s an entirely new direction for Starlink, which has never had contracts before, and allows customers to cancel at any time without incurring early termination fees. If preferred, customers in the designated regions can still purchase a dish upfront without signing up for the 12-month commitment.

Starlink is also offering free shipping, along with a 30-day return period, allowing buyers to return the dish for a full refund of the first month of service. Buyers can find out if they qualify for the 12-month commitment program by entering their address on Starlink's website.

There are a few strings attached that buyers should be aware of regarding the deal. This applies to the Residential service plan only and not Roam. Buyers who sign up for a plan cannot change their service address during the 12-month commitment period. Cancelling service, changing plan type, failing to pay your bill, or canceling within 30 days and not returning the dish will result in a change fee.

Starlink doesn’t specify the fee for breaking the terms and conditions, but it does state that it will be either a pro-rated or flat fee, depending on the market.

It’s yet another promotion to encourage more Starlink activity in areas that have excess network bandwidth. Inversely, Starlink also balances its service in congested areas by marking it as sold out or by charging a one-time congestion charge.

It’s the most affordable Starlink has ever been for U.S. customers, as long as they remain committed to the service for a year. A good deal for buyers in rural areas who have wanted to jump on Starlink, but were turned off by the pricey upfront cost.

The biggest downside is the various change fees that can be applied due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a customer’s sudden need to move or cancel service for financial reasons. Like many internet service plans that require a commitment, there is a bit of risk associated with the deal.
