Starlink Mobile (sometimes referred to as Starlink Direct-to-Cell) is the wing of the internet that deals with the satellite-to-mobile service, which the company officially launched in mid-2025. It uses Starlink's DTC satellites as orbiting cell towers to connect to most modern mobile phones. Currently, the system is being used with partnered carriers, with T-Mobile leading the way in the U.S. with its T-Satellite add-on feature.
T-Satellite allows users who leave cellular range to connect to satellites and retain a signal automatically. Currently, it supports text messaging, location sharing, and select apps, mostly geared for navigation and emergency communication. Starlink has said it will soon offer voice and video calling, as well as stronger, more reliable connections. This will likely happen when Starlink launches its next-generation fleet of satellites and gains access to more spectrum.
Starlink hasn't officially announced a stand-alone mobile service, but recent moves demonstrate they're all-in on direct-to-device connectivity, making a new offering make sense, and sooner than you may think. In fall 2025, SpaceX filed for an official trademark on "Starlink Mobile." Furthermore, it recently acquired spectrum licenses previously owned by the Boost Mobile operator EchoStar. This deal will be completed in 2027, allowing Starlink to leverage additional bands to boost its capacity.
Next-generation Starlink DTC satellites are also awaiting launch once SpaceX's Starship heavy rocket is in full service to expedite satellite deployment. As these things align, Starlink Mobile could become a full-fledged service provider as early as 2027 if that's indeed the plan.
